Walnut’s Farewell

Walnut's farewell

When Mark Woods learned that his 18-year-old dog, Walnut, was to be put down because he was suffering from a horrible disease, he decided to take him for his last walk, surrounded by lots of people and other pets.

Walnut’s story

Walnut was a Whippet dog who lived with his family on the coast of Cornwall, England. He loved to go for a walk on the icy beach, almost always in the morning, where everything was quiet. The owner, Mark, took advantage of these moments to talk to his pet and enjoy his pleasant company.

As the years went by, Walnut couldn’t walk so much on the beach. His legs were unresponsive and he preferred to stay at home, sleeping all day. The dog was already 18 years old. When they took him to the vet, he recommended the family to give him an injection so that he could leave this world in a smooth and painless way.

To summon anyone who wanted to accompany his dog not his last walk in life, Mark Woods posted the following message on Facebook: “With great sadness, I will have to put Walnut to sleep next Saturday. Our last walk around Pot Beach will be at 9:30 am, I would like everyone who loves pets, dog owners and friends to join us on this beach walk… He is ready for his ultimate dream. We are waiting for everyone”.

The owner wanted his faithful friend’s last moments to be one of celebration. That’s why he was surrounded by friends and other pets, not sadness. Many people responded to the invitation and accompanied Walnut on his last walk. It was, without a doubt, a more than emotional moment.

Mark walked his dog all over the beach, meanwhile, those who helped on the walk approached with their animals to pet the elderly dog and wish him a happy farewell. And that wasn’t all. In addition, the idea was followed in other places around the world: Australia, the United States and several locations in the United Kingdom posted photos with their dogs and the hashtag #WalkWithWalnut. The news even reached the local news, This Morning, and then the BBC television network ran a report on Mark in the middle of the ride.

goodbye to walnut

The day after the walk, Mark posted on Facebook the news that the puppy was resting in peace: “Walnut passed away at 11:56 am along with my wife, my children and my other three Whippets: Monty, Nelson and Charly. We were all with him until the last moment. He was gone fast and in my arms. I am writing to thank all those who supported me, but above all those who accompanied Walnut on the journey. Also, to those who have had their own tour with their pets around the world. I am very grateful, I have received messages from all over the world, I hope to reply to everyone. Thank you from my heart”.

Walnut’s last hours were of love and friendship. He was in the place he liked so much with his owner and friend, but also with many other people and pets around him. Goodbyes are never good and, without a doubt, the death of our animals marks our soul. However, at least this family has the comfort of knowing that Walnut was much loved in his 18 years of life and that, in the end, he received the affection of many beings he did not even know.

In his last minutes, Walnut only paid attention to the man who had accompanied him for nearly two decades and who was his best friend. Without a doubt, an emotional story of fidelity and completely disinterested love.
