Meet The Sausage Dog That Cleans The Streets Of New York

Meet the sausage dog that cleans the streets of New York

Pets that, for more or less noble reasons, become celebrities on the internet are increasingly common. This is the case of Crusoe, a sausage dog who wears different disguises, stars in videos and poses for photos that are booming on social networks. During the heavy snowfall that hit New York in March of last year, it was possible to see him riding a small tractor sweeping the snow.

The little animal became a real celebrity. It has nearly two million followers on its Facebook page. He is also present on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Vine, in addition to having a webpage and a blog written in first person.

This beautiful specimen of the miniature Dachshund breed, black and reddish, seems to be happy in the role in which its owners put it, who are behind all the actions. We prefer not to give an opinion on the matter. What is certain is that the little animal can be seen disguised with several homemade costumes and “living” these situations. For example:

  • Playing hockey.
  • Carrying out rescues like a Red Cross dog.
  • Watching television and dancing like Ellen DeGeneres.
  • Preparing delicacies like a famous chef de cuisine.

But he also likes everyday attitudes, like a “normal” dog, waking up in the morning and getting a good deal of petting. This seems to be the best version of Crusoe.

The good business of the Crusoe owners

Everything seems to indicate that this cute sausage dog is a good deal. And his owners already made that clear when, in 2010, he won a television contest for “best trick”, competing with furry of his own race.

They even published a book with their “adventures”, which became a best seller. And as it couldn’t be different, it has a virtual store where you can purchase various objects with your image, such as:

  • mugs
  • Kitchen utensils
  • bags
  • Cushions
  • stuffed animals

Crusoe, a sausage with DDIV

Crusoe was born 7 years ago in Montreal and currently resides in Ottawa. He seems to be very cosmopolitan and traveled, if you only consider his public image. But it’s not all flowers in the famous dachshund’s life.

In 2016, the little animal had to undergo urgent surgery because of intervertebral disc disease (DDIV). Surgeons should remove debris from your ruptured disc from your spinal cord. Luckily, the procedure was successful and the dog recovered satisfactorily. Although he literally learned to walk again.

But in addition to the fun proposal presented on its website, its website has a session to inform and raise awareness about the details of this disease that affects 25% of dachshunds. However, other breeds can also be affected, especially those that have a wider back part of the trunk, such as:

  • beagle
  • Basset Hound
  • Shih Tzu

His rehabilitation process was followed through blog posts and videos, with the aim of helping dogs that go through similar situations.

IVDD manifests when the intervertebral discs become calcified and are at risk of suffering from fractures in case of different impacts (jumping, “violent” games, etc.). Therefore, the risk is greater during the most active phase of the furry’s life.

If this calcification compresses the dog’s spinal cord, it can cause a lot of pain, loss of motor control and, in more severe cases, paralysis.

Anyway, there are preventive measures that can be taken, including:

  • Strengthen hairy bones
  • Prevent sudden movements during play
  • Avoid having to climb stairs
  • Place ramps for them to climb onto sofas and beds
