The Doberman is not a very old breed. It has been known since the 19th century or so. To get this breed, crosses were made with others, such as Rotweiller, Beauceron, among others.

In the beginning, your job was to protect your owner and his family from burglars. But as time went by, he became responsible for hunting and companionship. However, it is still widely used as a guard dog, thanks to its imposing presence.

The breed’s name was inspired by Karl Friedrich Louis Doberman, who worked as a vigilante and tax collector. Due to the dangers of night work, he soon needed an animal to defend himself from thieves. When looking for and testing different breeds, none of them seemed to satisfy him. That’s when he started to cross breeds until he got what we know today as Doberman.

While there is speculation about the two main races that gave rise to this one, we can’t say anything until we have genetic proof.

physical appearance

Its body is square, muscular, with small, dark eyes. He’s athletic and strong, but lean, which makes him a good runner, chasing down those who intend to harm his human family or himself.

They usually measure between 68 and 72 cm, in the case of males, weighing between 40 and 45 kg. Females, on the other hand, are between 60 and 65 cm in height and weigh between 32 and 35 kg.

The fur, despite being short and very close to the body, is robust and shiny, giving greater elegance to its look. The main colors accepted by international associations are:

  • black and red
  • brown and red
  • Red in well-defined spots in different regions of the body, such as feet, chest, neck, eyebrows, etc.
  • Beige with brown coffee marks
  • Blue with gray and copper marks

It is not possible to see a completely white or black Doberman. In that case, it will not be a purebred dog.

Its life expectancy is approximately 13 years and females can have up to 8 offspring per pregnancy.

Personality

doberman defense dog

Despite its reputation for violence because of some events that should not set a precedent, the Doberman is a loyal and very balanced dog. The problem is usually not the race, but the type of person who adopts it.

It is a very intelligent and sensible dog, but also dominant, haughty and with a very strong personality. Therefore, it needs its owner to be loving but firm, so that it is clear to the animal who is the leader of the pack and the head of the family.

Despite all this, his protective instinct is enormous. He will be willing to give his life to save yours or a family member.

You should be patient with him because of his personality, but the Doberman is a dog that will learn to follow orders without a problem.

Remember that a large dog with these characteristics is not suitable for everyone. Think long and hard before deciding whether or not the Doberman is the right dog for you. It’s a way to adopt responsibly.
